Those who do not attend the religious hour in class do not even have the ‘pass’ for the visit, during the trip with the teachers, to the paintings of the Cathedral. This is what happened to five children, boys and girls, of an elementary school in the San Donà di Piave area (Venice). An event that took place last May 20, when two schoolchildren, fourth and fifth grade, were on a trip with the teachers, a stage dedicated to the mosaics made by Father Marko Rupnik in the Cathedral of San Donà. When it was time to enter the sacred building, the mothers of two pupils denounced, the schoolchildren exempt from the hour of religion were asked to wait outside the church, while the companions began to visit the mosaics.
So the five little ones sat waiting on the steps of the Cathedral. The children were not left alone; the two classes took turns in the visit, and then the 5 pupils waited in the presence of a teacher. “My daughter – explained a mother – was given crosswords as a pastime” The woman reported that the school coordinator “justified herself on the phone by claiming that the mosaics represent scenes of the Eucharist and for this reason she decided, together with the other teachers, to exclude all children who do not attend the hour of religion “.
