(ANSA) – FLORENCE, 01 JUN – A hiker who was trekking in Mugello has discovered 11 British-made mortar bombs from the war remnants of the Second World War among the vegetation of a forest. The bomb squads of the Army of the Railway Engineers Regiment of Castel Maggiore (Bologna) destroyed the bombs on the spot with the usual safe operations. The discovery was near Grezzano, near Borgo San Lorenzo (Florence), close to the front of the Gothic line, where between the summer of 1944 and the spring of 1945 the German and Allied deployments faced each other.
In detail, the trekker saw in the green a kind of small ammunition depot, with three two-inch he (high explosive) mortar bombs and eight other three-inch mortar bombs, also he and of English production. . The bombs would have remained there for over 77 years, never found so far, and, according to what is known, it is plausible that they belonged to a mortar post, abandoned by the allied units in the fighting for the advance towards the Gothic line, on the Apennines.
