Etna: ash emission, delays at Catania airport

(ANSA) – CATANIA, 02 JUN – The ash emission present since yesterday from the south-east crater of Etna is causing delays at Catania airport in arriving and departing flights. At the moment, according to the airport’s website, only one plane, that of Wizz Air coming from Rome, has been diverted to Palermo.

The slowdowns are due to the limitation of take-offs and landings, which change as the emission of volcanic ash varies, due to the closure of an airspace after the red flight bulletin (Vona), the maximum alert level, issued yesterday by Eng. On Etna, according to what emerges from surveys of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, Etna Observatory, in Catania, meanwhile the effusive activity produced by the South-East crater continues, with the most advanced lava fronts that amount to about 2,100 meters. From the seismic point of view, the average amplitude of the volcanic tremor, although showing a slight decrease, is currently in the high range. (HANDLE).
