Prisons: demonstration and procession of families detained in Naples

(ANSA) – ROME, JUN 07 – The relatives of prisoners who organized a demonstration with a procession, this morning, in front of the main entrance of the prison, are asking for more humane prisons, capable of “producing citizens voted to legality and not to crime” Neapolitan of Poggioreale, the most crowded in Europe.

The relatives of the prisoners, who also came from other regions of Italy, went down to the square and “circumnavigated” the walls of the penitentiary structure, and stopped in front of one of the gates of the Naples court, the one that overlooks Piazza Cenni.

Present together with the relatives of the prisoners, the guarantor of the detainees of Campania, Samuele Ciambriello, and the guarantor of the detainees of Naples Pietro Ioia. “These families – says the guarantor of the Campania prisoners, Samuele Ciambriello – want nothing more than to attract the attention of public opinion on the subject of prisons: on Sunday there is an important referendum on Justice. The issue of prison is a central theme . Many people enter the cell as innocent, many as healthy people and then come out ill. One of the issues we raise today is that of health. Many attacks against agents see people with mental problems as protagonists. In Poggioreale there is a sert for drug addicts but the conditions are inhumane: even 8-10 people in a room; in the section of the so-called ‘sex offenders’ there is a room, 55bis, which houses 12 prisoners: there is only one window “.

For Pietro Ioia, prisons have become “schools of crime: a mother asks for nothing more that a child can come out changed from this sad experience, a person devoted to legality but from these places now more criminals are coming out than before”. Several times, during the journey, with a megaphone, the demonstrators asked for a signal from their close relatives in the pavilions: the so-called peaceful “beating” was also invoked, to which however the detainees preferred not to respond.
