Eighth grade exams, for 2 out of 3 tests starting from 13 June

Almost 1 in 5 students will start the eighth grade exams already this week, as soon as the lessons are over, which mostly end on June 8th. This is witnessed by 1,000 eighth grade pupils interviewed by the Skuola.net portal in recent days. More generally, for almost everyone the wait will be very short, considering that a further 62% say they will take the exam next week, from 13 June onwards. In the end, only a minority will carry out the tests almost parallel to the Maturity, ie from 20 June onwards. An exam, that of the eighth grade, which represents a great unknown for many students, after two years characterized, due to the pandemic, by an exam reduced to a thesis, moreover illustrated “from a distance”.

Two out of three written tests are back: Italian and mathematics, while the written in a foreign language was converted into an oral test, included in the final interview. And it is precisely there oral exam the transition that is fueling students’ anxiety: 41% say they are worried about having to answer the questions of the commission. While, among the written tests, it is above all that of mathematics that disturbs the sleep of the children: so for 40% of them.

The topic of Italian, on the other hand, is considered much more affordable: only 14% of the interviewees fear it. However, it is not only their emotional state that fuels the doubts and uncertainties of the students. There is also the perception of what has been done in class for the exam. The “work” done by the professors in recent months, in fact, collects discordant opinions: 46% found the help received from their teachers only “sufficient”, while just 15% believed they had been properly assisted; 26% complain of lack of consideration by their teachers and of not having been adequately prepared for the written tests, while 13% say they have not received the slightest indication to prepare for the exam. Among the undisputed protagonists of the oral exam is the essay / paper. An element that, these days, is at the top of the thoughts of the eighth grade students. Although, half of them seem to be well advanced with their preparation: 43% say they are about to complete it, 7% have already finished it.

The same cannot be said by the other half of the “licenziandi”, divided between those who have recently started to work on it (32%), among those who still sail on the high seas having chosen only the topic without however having passed to the operational phase ( 10%) and who, even worse, have not even begun to think about it (3%). Students in good standing and laggards who, however, both have a common ally: the Internet. 42% of the interviewees stated that they were inspired by “navigating” a bit to decide the theme of their work. And if the writings have been badly received by the students, the return of the tests “in presence” is instead a positive element for them: 43% believe it is better to carry out the examination in presence, against 32% who instead would have liked to continue on the false line of the past two years, with a remote examination. In general, however, a few hours from the start of the exam, the feelings of the students are not so bad: 61% of the interviewees say they are confident, considering themselves prepared enough to face it.
