(ANSA) – TURIN, 23 JUN – The Appeal process for the tragic events in Piazza San Carlo, in Turin, began this morning in Turin. Among the defendants, the former mayor, Chiara Appendino, sentenced to 18 months in the first degree trial with shortened rite for manslaughter and injuries. The same condemnation received by his former head of cabinet Paolo Giordana, the then commissioner Angelo Sanna, the former president of Turismo Torino (the agency that took charge of the creation of the event) Maurizio Montagnese, and Enrico Bertoletti, professional who took care of part of the design.
Appendino, defended by the lawyer Luigi Chiappero and by the lawyer Enrico Cairo, is present in the courtroom. Bertoletti, on the other hand, withdrew from the appeal.
The trial refers to the events of June 3, 2017, when panic broke out among the crowd that was watching the Champions League final between Juventus and Real Madrid, causing the injury of over 1,600 people and the death of two women: Erika Pioletti, died in hospital after about ten days, and Marisa Amato, who remained quadriplegic and died in 2019.
