Today in the Verkhovna Rada, the guard of honor of the National Guard carried and solemnly installed on the podium next to the flag of Ukraine the flag of the European Union. This event is timed to coincide with our country obtaining the status of a candidate for EU membership.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was on video link when the flag was set. She smiled and applauded.
Commenting on the installation of the EU flag, the speaker of parliament said from the rostrum that his dream had come true.
“Until this morning, I had two dreams. The first is when the flag of the European Union will fly in the hall of the Verkhovna Rada, next to the yellow-blue flag! The second is when I finally take off my military uniform and put on a white shirt with a suit to see off plenary sessions in a peaceful parliament. The first dream has already come true. So a friend will come true! Definitely!”, – said the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk.
He also noted that the EU flag suits the Verkhovna Rada both in color and in meaning.
