(ANSA) – PALERMO, 01 JUL – The sentence to 26 years in prison of Mohamed Ibrahim Abd El Moatty Hamdy, the 26-year-old Egyptian held responsible for the murder of Gianluca Bianca, the Syracusan commander of the fishing boat ‘Fatima II’ who disappeared in July 2012 during a fishing trip in the waters between Malta and Libya. The Court of Cassation rejected the appeal against the sentence that had been imposed on him by the Court of Assizes of appeal.

The sentence became as final as it had already happened for the other Egyptian Mohamed Elasha Rami, after his defense had not lodged an appeal. A third crew member, a Tunisian, had been acquitted by the Court of Assizes.

According to the Syracuse Public Prosecutor’s Office on board the fishing boat there would have been a quarrel between the North African and Italian sailors: the two Egyptians would have organized the mutiny during which the commander Gianluca Bianca would have died, whose body would have been thrown into the sea.
