(ANSA) – AOSTA, 02 JUL – The Court of Cassation rejected the appeal of the former president of the Valle d’Aosta Region Augusto Rollandin against the sentence of acquittal for prescription in a corruption trial pronounced by the Turin Court of Appeal in September 2021. The court of Aosta, in March 2019, had sentenced him to four years and six months of corruption for a matter related to the Autoporto. In the second instance, the judges had declassified the crime in corruption “for the exercise of the function”, declaring the prescription of the matter under examination: therefore this sentence of acquittal for Rollandin remains confirmed.

Two other defendants, the entrepreneur Gerardo Cuomo and the former managing director of the Forte di Bard Gabriele Accornero, had been sentenced in second instance to one year in prison each, with conditional, for “corruption for the exercise of the function”: the judges of the sixth criminal section instead ordered the annulment of the sentence with reference to a different section of the Turin Court of Appeal.

“Probably if we had waived the limitation period, the Court would almost certainly have ordered the annulment with postponement” of Rollandin’s charge as well, his defense lawyer Giorgio Piazzese told ANSA. “The fact that the only item for which Accornero had been convicted was annulled and sent back to the Court of Appeal is an extremely positive result for this defense”, comments Accornero’s defender, the lawyer Corrado Bellora.
