Drought: extreme heat puts the Colfiorito swamp at risk

The Colfiorito swamp is in danger of “disappearing” due to the effects of the great heat that has been bringing Umbrian rivers and lakes to their knees for over a month.
The water has almost completely dried up on a large part of the reservoir, as shown by the earth split by the sun and withstands, for a few centimeters, only close to the observatory, in front of the old abandoned boat, but now integrated into the landscape. Here the water birds continue to swim undisturbed, even if the water level is so low that the bottom is clearly visible.
The pole, positioned in the middle of the swamp, with which the hydrometric level is measured, certifies how drought is taking over, day after day, even this wet area which in 1995 was declared an area of international importance.
The Colfiorito swamp is unique of its kind and is nestled between the mountains of the Umbrian-Marche Apennines, in the municipality of Foligno. It is part of the Colfiorito Natural Park which extends for about 338 hectares.
Thousands of birds feed and nest in the reeds of the marsh every year. The area, also equipped with picnic tables, attracts dozens of visitors every day. (HANDLE).
