(ANSA) – TRIESTE, 03 JUL – “Trivial, sporadic, exuberant episodes, perhaps manipulated and artfully agitated, cannot stain the Alpini and those who gave their lives for their homeland. They cannot stain those who are always ready to work for the solidarity and for the common good at the service of Italy and Europe in the world “. This was stated by the mayor of Trieste, Roberto Dipiazza, welcoming in the late afternoon yesterday the Alpine relay arrived in piazza Unità d’Italia on the occasion of the 150 / o anniversary of the Corps, at the end of a journey of 1,500 kilometers divided into 23 stages, from Ventimiglia to Trieste.
Dipiazza had been at the center of controversy, in recent weeks, after his intervention in defense of the Alpine troops at the last meeting, in Emilia Romagna, where numerous episodes of harassment of women had been reported by social media.
Recalling the values of the Alpine troops, “homeland, family, solidarity”, which “cannot and must never overshadow”, Dipiazza underlined the help given by the Alpine troops in the places of the earthquake in Friuli.
“‘Trieste greets the Alpini, generous friends of all time’ – said Dipiazza, taking up one of his slogan coined for the 2004 meeting in Trieste – recalling that a total of six” historic and unforgettable “national gatherings have been held in the city since 1930. “Long live the Alpini, long live Trieste, long live Italy”, he concluded.
