Massacre of Christians in Burkina Faso, at least 22 dead

(ANSA) – VATICAN CITY, JULY 05 – Armed men launched an attack on Bourasso, a town located near Dédougou, capital of the province of Kossi, region of Boucle du Mouhoun, in Burkina Faso. The still provisional death toll provided by the regional administration is 22 dead and an unspecified number of injured, while local sources, contacted by the pontifical foundation Aid to the Church in Need, report over 30 deaths. The governor, in a statement, spoke of a “terrorist threat”. The episode took place in the night between 3 and 4 July. Among the victims, many Christians but also faithful of traditional African religions.

“The terrorists arrived by motorbike in the village of Bourasso on Sunday 3 July around 5 pm, then they left without doing anything, but returned during the night, threatening the villagers in the courtyard in front of the church”, he tells Aid to the Church in Suffering One of survivors. The terrorists, who have been threatening the entire region for about two years, have already come to the village several times. “They killed 14 people in front of the church,” said a priest from the cathedral of Nouna, located 20 km from Bourasso, whose identity cannot be disclosed for security reasons.

After this first massacre, the attackers headed inside the village to kill another twenty or so people. “We are terrified. It is really chaos”, testifies the priest. “Here, when we get up, we know we are alive, but we don’t know if we will still be alive in the evening”, concludes the priest. (HANDLE).
