Government, Count:

The trial in Italy for the four Egyptian 007s accused of kidnapping, torturing and killing Giulio Regeni in February 2016 risks running aground permanently. The judges of the Supreme Court have, in fact, declared inadmissible the appeal of the Public Prosecutor of Rome against the decision of the GUP which on 11 April ordered, as already done by the Court of Assizes last October, the suspension of the proceedings by ordering new searches for the defendants to whom the acts are to be served. A decision that imposes a further, drastic, brake blow on the proceeding pending before the court of Rome. The judges of the Supreme Court were called to express their opinion on the appeal advanced by the prosecutors of piazzale Clodio in which they are asked to leave this “procedural lull” which brought the trial to an abrupt stop. The ermellini excluded that the measures of Assise and Gup could be challenged with the appeal to cassation “as not abnormal”. In the morning a sit in was held in front of the Supreme Court which was also attended by Giulio’s parents, Claudio and Paola. In the appeal, the deputy prosecutor Sergio Colaiocco requested an intervention of “clarity” to the stoats to overcome the provisions of the judge for the preliminary hearings which, referring to what was decided by the III Court of Assizes last October, ruled that the process cannot move forward as there are no notifications to the accused. For the office headed by Franco Lo Voi, a necessary different technical assessment was required in order to ensure the existence of the guarantees of due process recognized to the four 007s.

With the appeal, the magistrates of piazzale Clodio had asked the Supreme Court to clarify whether it is sufficient, for the celebration of the trial, that “there is a reasonable certainty – as the Court of Assizes writes in the provision with which it postponed the proceedings to the attention of the GUP – that the four Egyptian defendants are aware of the existence of a criminal case against them concerning serious crimes committed to the detriment of Regeni “. According to the Capitoline Prosecutor’s Office, what was decided by the Court of Assizes is in contrast with what was expressed by the Supreme Court in some judgments in which it is stated that one can proceed in the process even if the party ignores the date of the hearing and the charge, when it is it is essentially in the presence of “fake unaware”. Last April the judge, in light of the total closure of the Egyptian authorities in judicial collaboration, entrusted a new delegation to the carabinieri del Ros to carry out further research, updating the hearing to next 10 October. In recent months, the parents of the Friulian researcher have launched an appeal via social media to ask for a mobilization in order to identify the addresses of the four torturers. A post on Fb, published in three languages (Italian, English and Arabic), which also included the photos of three defendants identified by the Ros on open sources.
