One of Sails of Scampia it has finally been transformed into the seat of the University Federico II of Naples. After 16 years of work, some degree courses of the University’s School of Medicine and Surgery will be transferred here, whose lessons will start as early as next September. A project that thus contributes to changing the image of the northern area of Naples, often associated exclusively with the land of Gomorrah, drug dealing and the feud between criminal groups.

A territory, on the other hand, which for years has been a hotbed of associations and activities that are committed to showing the city and the rest of the country that Scampia is something other than Gomorrah. And now university students will arrive here from next autumn. Piece of a broader “integrated social project” that the administration has put in place for the district and the entire northern area of the city and which also provides for the redevelopment of urban greenery, the construction of the cycle path and an adequate implementation of the transportation system.

“These are all factors – says the mayor Gaetano Manfredi – that go in the same direction, that of rmaking a land with great potential fertile bringing education and economic development “.

The Sails, seven in all, were built between 1962 and 1975 on a project by the architect Franz Di Salvo. The project also included aggregation centers and common areas, a play area for children and other collective equipment. A nucleus of socialization that was never realized contributing to the failure of the work as conceived. And over the years the Vele have become increasingly synonymous with degradation, crime and drug dealing.

Of the original seven buildings, three were demolished: in 1997, 2000 and 2003. Four remain standing. With the Giunta de Magistris to the Municipality of Naples, the ‘Re-Start Scampia’ project was born, which involves the demolition of three other sails and the redevelopment of the Celestial Sail to be allocated to services and to the headquarters of the Metropolitan City. On February 20, 2020, the demolition of the Vela Verde begins, which will end on July 1 of that year. The program has a total cost of 27 million euros, 18 of which financed with funds from the Periferie Bando and 9 million from Pon Metro. In recent months, the administration led by Mayor Manfredi has accelerated the conclusion and delivery of the Vela to the University.
