Mountaineering, Picco and Camandona climb Broad Peak

Government, Count:

(ANSA) – AOSTA, 20 JUL – The Valle d’Aosta consortium formed by Pietro Picco and Marco Camandona reached the summit of Broad Peak at 8,047 meters above sea level, on the border between China and Pakistan, in the Karakorum chain, about 8 km from K2 . Camandona thus emerges another peak among the highest mountains in the world, marking its personal twelfth ‘eight thousand’. Francois Cazzanelli gave up instead: the intention of the strong mountaineer was to tackle Broad Peak with his own ‘summit push’ technique but half an hour from the top, at about 8,000 meters, due to an accident involving a British mountaineer, he stopped and decided not to continue as at that point the priorities were other.

On Friday 15 July the Valle d’Aosta consortium arrived at the K2 base camp. Thanks to a window of good weather until day 20, Camandona, Picco and Cazzanelli therefore decided to attack the summit of Broad Peak. Camandona and Picco set off on July 18th together from Broad Peak base camp, which is an hour from K2 base camp. They arrived at camp 2 at an altitude of 6,400 meters and decided to continue to camp 3 at an altitude of 7,000 meters, where they arrived at 13.30 Italian time. After eating and resting for a few hours, at 11pm local time, they set off for the summit. On Tuesday 19 July 2022 Pietro Picco first, and after about an hour and a half Marco Camandona (10.50 am local time), reached the summit of Broad Peak at 8,047 meters. Camandona returned to Broad Peak Base Camp in the evening. Picco stopped at camp 3 and waited for Cazzanelli: this morning they returned to K2 base camp, the summit which is now the next goal.
