(ANSA) – NAPLES, 23 JULY – “The friars do not touch each other”. This is the slogan that can be read on one of the banners that were posted in front of the doors of the ancient Franciscan convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, in Giugliano, in the Neapolitan area. And the faithful today staged a flash mob.
After 400 years the friars leave and the structure, opened in 1622, will be entrusted to the diocese of Aversa. The decision to close was taken by the Provincial Curia of the Friars Minor of Naples due to a vocation crisis. For this reason, starting from September other convents in the provinces of Naples and Caserta will also be closed.
But in Giugliano the faithful, and not only, contest this decision and have staged various initiatives – up to today’s flash mob – to keep the friars in their place. (HANDLE).
