Drought: mountain guides, stop at the Swiss normal route to the Matterhorn

Earth's rivers and lakes increasingly fragile, the first map to protect them arrives (ANSA)

(ANSA) – AOSTA, 25 JUL – The normal Swiss route to the Matterhorn joins the list of itineraries where the mountain guides have for the moment decided not to accompany their customers anymore due to the high altitude conditions linked to drought. This was announced in a post on facebook by the National College of Italian Alpine Guides. The choice of Swiss professionals from Zermatt and Verbier follows by a few days the similar ones of the Aosta Valley and French mountain guides, due to dangers such as falling stones.

In the Aosta Valley, the sale of the climbs along the normal Italian route to the Matterhorn and of the Gengiva and Dente del Gigante towards the Rochefort ridge, on the Mont Blanc massif, has been temporarily suspended. The professionals from Chamonix and Saint-Gervais (France) have decided not to take the normal French route to Mont Blanc from the Gouter refuge for the moment.

The choices, made “in concert” between the guides of the three states, also involve the Monte Rosa massif, where “a one-day tour to the Pollux (between Valle d’Aosta and Valais) is strongly discouraged”.

“The decision, certainly not easy after two years of pandemic, was taken – reads the post – by the mountain guides who monitored the situation day by day and, taking note of the particularly delicate conditions of recent weeks caused by a rise in temperature important, they considered it necessary to postpone the climbs to improve conditions “.
