Those executed in Burma “deserved many death sentences”

The four prisoners executed by the junta of Myanmar in the first cases of capital punishment in the country “would have deserved many death sentences”. This was stated by Zaw Min Tun, spokesman for the military junta during a briefing with the media, adding that “if we compare their sentence with other cases of capital punishment, they have committed crimes for which they should have been sentenced to death many times”.

The execution of the four opponents of the regime, including a former member of Aung San Suu Kyi’s party, is “highly reprehensible”, said the Cambodian presidency of ASEAN, the Association of Southern Nations. east asia. A statement states that the body has been “extremely disturbed and deeply saddened” by the executions, the first in Myanmar in decades, and accuses the junta of a “serious unwillingness” in engaging in Asean’s efforts to facilitate dialogue between the military and its opponents.

The statement also underlines how the executions took place “despite the personal appeal” of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen to suspend the proceedings. ASEAN, which includes 10 nations including Myanmar, has spearheaded diplomatic efforts to end the chaos unleashed by last year’s coup. In April 2021 it reached a “five-point consensus” with the junta, calling for an end to violence and a “constructive dialogue”. But the violence continued, with anti-junta groups regularly clashing with the military, accused of having set fire to some villages.

According to Cambodian state media, Myanmar’s foreign minister was not invited to the body’s ministerial convened next week. Myanmar remains isolated on the international scene, and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen was the only foreign head of state to go there after the coup. Since then, more than 2,100 people have been killed in a bloody military crackdown, according to a local human rights organization.
