A 55-year-old from Belluno suffering from a serious lung disease was excluded from the list of candidates for organ transplantation because it was deemed “unsuitable” by the medical team, by virtue of his “paranoid ideas” about Covid. The doctors of the Padua hospital, in the light of “his conspiratorial beliefs about the vaccine”, feared “that the patient might not adhere to the therapies necessary to make the transplant effective”. The man has never accepted the anti-Covid vaccine, because it would be ‘experimental’. But Covid 19 is a disease that affects precisely these organs and performing a lung transplant on an unvaccinated, who has a much higher chance of death than an immunized, means for doctors “to jeopardize the patient’s life and good use of the donated organ “. The 55-year-old, suffering from severe lung disease contracted on the job, initially asked surgeons to receive “the lung of an unvaccinated man.” The director of Thoracic Surgery of the Padua hospital, prof. Federico Rea, specified that “there is no ideological motivation behind the choice not to include the patient in the list”, but “a scrupulous analysis by numerous medical-clinical and psychiatric professionals, in order to evaluate with extreme rigor and ethics of ethics the appropriateness of the transplant in the specific case “. The list in Italy is made up of over 350 patients a year, of which fewer than 150 are satisfied with the possibility of completing the transplant, due to a lack of organs and donors sufficient to meet the needs.
