(ANSA) – CROTONE, 16 AUG – Two alleged smugglers, respectively of Syrian and Egyptian nationality, were identified and stopped by the military of the Naval Operations Section of the Crotone Finance Police who acted with the coordination of the local Public Prosecutor’s Office.

The measures were carried out at the end of a series of operations, which were completed on Sunday evening, started as part of the integrated device of the air and naval assets of the Guardia di Finanza, Port Authority and the European Agency Frontex and of the operation Themis 2022 which had reported some sailing boats crammed with migrants heading towards the Calabrian coasts on their approach to Italy.

During the first event, which led to the implementation of the restrictive measures, a boat with 110 people on board was identified, approached by a patrol vessel of the Aeronavale Group of the Guardia di Finanza of Taranto which, upon entering Italian territorial waters proceeded with the boarding, taking control of it and escorting it to the port of Crotone. At the same time, a Coast Guard of the Crotone Finance Police, in cooperation with the CP321 patrol boat of the Crotone Harbor Office and a Romanian Patrol Boat of the Frontex Agency, intercepted another sailboat previously sighted by the air assets. The financiers, after keeping the boat under strict control with about 90 people on board, including Afghans and Egyptians, got on board and escorted it to the Port of Crotone.

Another 75 migrants, of Syrian and Afghan nationality, including 30 minors, were spotted by Frontex naval assets on a 14-meter sloop, then boarded by a Coast Guard of the Aeronavale Group of the Guardia di Finanza of Messina. (HANDLE).
