From Bari to Turin, suffering from a very rare disease – primary pulmonary hypertension – and saved with an exceptional and unique multiple heart and two lung transplant in Ecmo. The operation, carried out on a 19-year-old Apulian girl, lasted 12 hours, and was completed at the Molinette hospital in the City of Health in Turin. To save the young woman, a national urgent request from the three organs for a single life-saving transplant was launched. The heart-lung block was removed from a donor from Trieste. At the end of the surgery, the organs began to function and the patient began to breathe on her own.
For the young woman, under therapy with Ecmo and mechanical ventilation at the Policlinico di Bari, the only way to go was transplantation: with a special flight by the Italian Air Force she was taken to the Molinette Heart-Lung Transplant Center, from where the urgent request of the organs has started.
