Casa Futuro in Amatrice, Boeri: ‘It is a model of restart’

Elections, Calenda:

Six years after the earthquake of 24 August 2016, Amatrice tries to start again. And it does so also with Casa Futuro, the project carried out by Studio Boeri Architetti that the Diocese of Rieti and the National Opera for Southern Italy are carrying out in the area of the “Don Minozzi” complex. Since the laying of the first stone, on 15 October 2021, the construction site of the largest private reconstruction project in the Reatino country is among those that are proceeding most rapidly. All demolition works have been completed. The consolidation and renovation of the former farm is almost complete.

“The construction site begins to function as an open-air laboratory in which, for example, the rubble is reused as much as possible for the construction of driveways and walkable surfaces. Thanks to its formidable social and regenerative value of an economy and a path formative, the Casa Futuro can also be used as a model for restarting the entire country “, explains architect Stefano Boeri. Now “agreements must be made with the various cultural, economic and social subjects that will make it possible to fill these spaces with contents – explains the bishop of Rieti, Mgr. Domenico Pompili – Inspired by Laudato si ‘and conceived from a unitary perspective, the project intends be a concrete way to translate reconstruction into regeneration, thanks to attention to young people, the elderly, the economy and culture “.

Oriented according to the principles of Laudato si ‘, the architecture of Casa Futuro will be divided into various courts and provides for a virtuous use of the rubble and excavated earth and takes into account the energy and environmental sustainability of the buildings, with extensive use of photovoltaic panels. and a particular attention to the recovery and recycling of rainwater. The execution of the works is financed by the Special Office for Reconstruction (Usr) of Lazio with 48 million euros. Both specific donations to the Diocese of Rieti and different realities such as Banca Mediolanum and the Laudato Si ‘Communities, which await a center for environmental studies within the complex, contribute to the realization of the project.

This vocation to research, and therefore to young people, will be one of the leitmotifs of Casa Futuro. Contacts have already started with the Gran Sasso Science Institute to host training internships for students in the Corte dell’Accoglienza. Also for the Court of Arts and Crafts, the idea is to involve the University of Teramo for its Degree Course in Viticulture and Oenology and, together with Slow Food, to think about the agri-food chain. Attention to young people also requires dialogue between generations: in addition to hosting the Disciples of Don Minozzi and the Handmaids of the Lord, the Court of Silence will see the presence of a retirement home, also as a sign of continuity with the last phase of the experience of the area before the earthquake. Finally, the Civic Court will be a real area of common goods: in addition to hosting the administrative offices, it will be dedicated to the memory of Amatrice, her art and her history.
