Which is Celestinian Forgiveness and what is its meaning? In 1294 Pope Celestine V granted, on the evening of his coronation in the basilica of Collemaggio, the plenary indulgence to the faithful of Christ, until then reserved only to those who were able to ‘gain’ it.

Forgiveness, renewed annually, would therefore have been granted to everyone from that moment on, even to the poor and dispossessed. And from the Bull of Forgiveness, issued by Celestino V, kept in the armored chapel of the Civic Tower of the Palazzo Comunale dell’Aquila until the earthquake of 2009, the name ‘Perdonanza’ derives.

The ancient civic statutes wanted the civic authority to call the Feast of Forgiveness in compliance with the will of Pope Celestino V. Over the centuries the event led to disinterest and in the second half of the twentieth century the ceremony , called Perdonanza also thanks to the medievalist term of Gabriele D’Annunzio, was limited to the religious function and little else. Between the seventies and eighties there was a rediscovery of the figure of Celestino V and the universal character of the Bull of Forgiveness, thanks to the mayor Tullio De Rubeis.

Forgiveness has returned to being a solemn annual rite of reconciliation, social cohesion and integration, it promotes the values of sharing, hospitality and fraternity and for this reason it also includes a full calendar of events including shows, debates and a highly anticipated historical procession, with the Lady of the Bull and the Young Lord.

Unesco has recognized Forgiveness as an intangible heritage due to the requisites that characterize it as representative on a global scale, but its protection remains in the hands of the community.
