Negotiations are underway in Moscow between representatives of the Russian government and the government of the Taliban Islamist movement, unrecognized by the world community, which seized power in Afghanistan in August.

According to the BBC, the delegation was warmly greeted by representatives of the Russian Foreign Ministry and accommodated in the “President Hotel” in the center of Moscow, where the negotiations took place.

Meeting with Lavrov

In addition to numerous interviews that Russian propaganda TV channels are willingly taking from the Taliban, representatives of Afghanistan met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Lavrov called the Taliban representatives “a respected delegation.”

“The task of achieving sustainable peace in Afghanistan is still urgent. Lavrov’s words at the opening of a meeting with the Taliban, Interfax news agency.

Recall that a month ago, instead of negotiating with the leaders of the rebellious Panjshir province, its resistance forces were defeated with the help of Pakistani aviation, the leaders were captured by the Taliban and executed.

Kremlin commentary

Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov noted that contacts with the Taliban are aimed at understanding the situation in Afghanistan and their future intentions.

“In Moscow today, the so-called” Moscow format “is underway, and direct contacts are aimed at better understanding what is happening in this state, what are the intentions of the Taliban. Therefore, de facto, this communication is being carried out, de jure the Taliban are not recognized by world powers , they are also not recognized by the Russian Federation. But de facto they are the leadership of Afghanistan“, – said Peskov to reporters.

What the Taliban want

First of all, at a meeting in Moscow, the Islamists raised the issue of recognizing their government.

Why shouldn’t they officially recognize us? We control the entire territory of Afghanistan and we have fulfilled all the conditions and meet all standards as a government“- said the so-called foreign minister in the Taliban government Amir Khan Muttaki.

The Taliban are also interested in unfreezing the assets of the central bank of Afghanistan abroad. “All participating countries supported the unfreezing of the assets of the central bank of Afghanistan, which, in fact, are the property of the Afghan people,” Muttaki said at the final press conference.
