The “war against the cost of living” is restarting with symbolic initiatives that will now extend to many Italian squares to protest against the dizzying increase in gas and electricity.

A symbolic bonfire where bills can be burned: already on Saturday in Bologna in the central Via Ugo Bassi, a stone’s throw from the Two Towers, an initiative organized by the ‘Noi Non Pagiamo Emilia-Romagna’ campaign took place, promoted by groups of workers to protest against the increases “that we cannot afford to pay – protesters denounced – and we will not pay them”.

A garrison in front of an Eni energy store. It took shape like this a Turin, in corso Regina Margherita, the mobilization proclaimed nationwide by the Usb to protest against the expensive bills. It was also attended by representatives of Change Course – Communist Youth Organization, Power to the People and District Heating Committee of the metropolitan city. “The situation – said Enzo Miccoli of Usb Torino – is serious. The rise in prices is determined by the choice of governments to remain on imperialist positions and by the shameful speculation carried out by companies. Energy must be public: it is the only one way to have a price ceiling “. The ‘store’ dropped its shutters before the demonstrators arrived.

About twenty people protested against the increase in bills in Naples. The sit-in took place in front of the Cassa Depositi e Prestiti headquarters, in via Verdi. Protesters showed passersby their bills which have risen significantly since the same period last year. Costs that have been judged unsustainable for which intervention by the state is required. A protester also burned copies of two gas and electricity bills.

“We can no longer go on, we are paying quadrupled bills. It affects citizens and workers, who sooner or later will be fired by companies forced to close”. It is the cry of pain of the representatives of the Usb – among them many retirees – who this morning met in the center of Cagliari, under the Enel and INPS buildings, to protest against the expensive bills and denounce the speculation by multinationals. The representatives of the base trade union report a dramatic situation for many Sardinian families. The bills in hand and displayed on the billboards, to underline the weight of those figures on the budgets of a family that cannot afford the increases. “The price of food alone in Sardinia has increased by 11.2% which on average will force Sardinian families to spend an extra 780 euros a year just for food – says Enrico Rubiu, one of the spokesmen of the protest -. Istat, the items related to housing (energy, heating, water, etc.), increased by 26%. Abbanoa also announced imminent price increases. It is unsustainable “. The recipe, according to the Usb, goes through two ways: “We need a threshold, for all families, below which we do not pay for electricity, because it is a basic necessity and it cannot be made to less, beyond the threshold you should then pay a controlled price. Today there are no controls and, thanks to the war in Ukraine, there is speculation “. The other road passes through the courts. The Confederal USB has presented in many cities, including Cagliari, a complaint to the Public Prosecutor’s Office to denounce “all the conducts carried out by companies that trade gas, electricity and petroleum products to the detriment of the community in the most deafening silence of entities and ministries in charge of the control who should intervene – explain the promoters -. With the complaint they are also asking for explanations on the speculations of those who justify the increase in prices on the basis of the closing of the Russian taps “.
