State Duma deputies demanded that Google correctly display Crimea, Sevastopol and the Kuril Islands on Google maps.

This was reported by the TASS agency with reference to the statement of Vasily Piskarev, head of the committee on security and anti-corruption of the Russian parliament, the legitimacy of which is not recognized by Ukraine.

They insist

We insist on bringing the Russian version of “Google Maps” into line with Russian legislation and the Russian Constitution“, – said Piskarev.

According to him, back in April, at a meeting with representatives of Google, “it was pointed out that the display of individual administrative-territorial units and territories of the Russian Federation on service maps does not correspond to Russian legislation,” but the problem has not yet been resolved.

Then the director of government relations at Google Russia assured the Russian side that this is a protracted technical failure that has no political basis and that the elimination of this error is almost a priority in the work of Google Russia.

At the same time, the international company was threatened with appealing to the Prosecutor General’s Office and Roskomnadzor, if the situation was not corrected within a month.

Background to the issue

  • For several years now, Russian deputies have been trying to force Google to include the territory of Crimea as the territory of the Russian Federation in their maps. And do the same with the Kuril Islands, which Japan considers to be its own.
  • In 2016, Google, by decree of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, “decommunized” the settlements of Crimeaa on his maps, but later canceled the “decommunization” of Crimea and returned the previous names.
  • There were also questions about the state ownership of the Ukrainian peninsula. To which director of “Google Ukraine” Dmitry Sholomko then told reporters that everything depends on the settings of Google-Maps.
