Russia will soon appeal to the Supreme Court of the Netherlands against the decision of the Amsterdam court on Scythian gold, which should transfer to Ukraine.

This is reported by TASS with reference to the deputy head of the working group on international legal issues at the permanent mission of the temporarily occupied Crimea under the President of Russia Alexander Molokhov.

“If I were directly involved in this issue, we would have filed a complaint tomorrow. A team of Dutch lawyers is working.”, – he said.

What is known

The Amsterdam Court of Appeal ruled on October 26 that the collection of Scythian gold should be transferred to Ukraine. The corresponding decision was announced by the presiding judge Paulina Hofmeier-Rütten. According to her, the disputed objects are part of the cultural heritage of Ukraine and should be transferred to the Ukrainian side.

How events developed

  • A collection of 565 museum items provided by the Central Museum of Taurida, the Kerch Historical and Cultural Reserve, the National Reserve “Chersonesos Tavrichesky” and the Bakhchisarai Historical and Cultural Reserve, was transferred to the Allard Pearson Museum from February 6 to May 28, 2014 as part of the exhibition ” Crimea is a golden island in the Black Sea “.
  • After the illegal annexation of the peninsula by Russia, a dispute arose over whether to return the exhibits to Crimea or to the territory controlled by the Ukrainian authorities.
  • In August 2014, a museum in the Netherlands decided not to transfer the exhibits to either Ukraine or Crimea until a decision of a competent judge or an agreement between the parties.
  • The District Court of Amsterdam ruled in December 2016 that “Scythian gold” must be returned to the Ukrainian side… The court made such a decision based on the UNESCO convention. It states that the works of art must be returned to the sovereign state that provided them for temporary display. However, the occupiers appealed this decision to the Amsterdam Court of Appeal. The court made another decision in favor of Ukraine in 2018, however, it was also appealed.
  • March 11, 2019 the court of Amsterdam began to consider the appeal of the museums of Crimea on the return of the “Scythian gold”.
  • Part of the Scythian gold returned to Ukraine in September 2014. But of 584 exhibits, the Netherlands returned to their homeland only 19 – those that have always been kept in Kiev.
  • The so-called Russian Crimean museums, registered under Russian law, who are plaintiffs in the case of “Scythian gold”, in fact, had nothing to do with legal relations, according to which the artifacts were transferred to the Netherlands.
