The head of the monitoring group on Crimean sanctions and freedom of navigation, Andrei Klimenko, said that, despite international sanctions, a passenger plane flew from the EU to the Russian-occupied Crimea peninsula.

Andrey Klimenko posted pictures of the aircraft’s flight information transmitted using ADS-B technology on his Facebook page.

What is known

According to this map, the plane made a flight from the Netherlands to Simferopol, having successfully flown over the western part of Belarus and across the entire territory of Ukraine. Further, presumably, he took the direction to Russia through the Black Sea.

The data of the board itself under No. 23155 is hidden from ordinary users. The website of the American company FlightAware, which provides real-time flight data, historical and forecast data, and flight tracking products, says the aircraft was certified to fly in 1966. Who its owner is is unknown.

Who was that

In the comments to the post, several suggestions are made as to who could have flown this plane. Among them is another delegation of pro-Russian EU parliamentarians who willingly violate the sanctions.

It is possible that it was some kind of traveler. However, the Ukrainian authorities did not report on granting someone the right to fly to sanctioned Crimea by way of exception.

There is also a version that a delegation of Russian lawyers, propagandists and representatives of the so-called Crimean authorities who flew to Amsterdam for a court hearing on the collection of the so-called “Scythian gold” returned on the plane. The session of the Amsterdam Court of Appeal, which ruled against Russia, was held on October 26.

Sanctions

  • Since March 2014, Ukraine has closed the airspace over the occupied Crimea peninsula due to the inability to oversee the safety of flights in the organization of air traffic and ensure flight safety. All airports of the occupied territory of the peninsula have officially ceased to function.
  • In 2016, Ukraine charged Russian airlines that violated Ukrainian legislation and flew to the occupied Crimea more than UAH 700 million in fines.
  • A year ago, a Ukrainian court seized 65 aircraft of Russian companies that illegally flew to Russian-occupied Crimea.
  • Kiev also turned to the Ukrainian Bureau of Interpol for help in finding aircraft that violate the Ukrainian procedure for entering and leaving Crimea – they continue to fly to the peninsula. According to the Ukrainian prosecutor’s office, about 500 such planes have been installed and 190 declared arrested.
