The President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella is in Crotone to pay homage to the victims of the shipwreck in the waters of the boat on which a group of migrants were traveling which took place on Sunday morning in the waters in front of Steccato di Cutro. Mattarella remained in recollection in front of the coffins gathered in the funeral home that was organized in Crotone. The head of state remained alone in front of the coffins for a few minutes.
Mattarella then left the Palamilone of Crotone greeted by the applause of the citizens. “President, we want justice and truth”, some shouted at him. Lots of applause paid to the head of state who has not made any statements
The shipwreck of the boat that left from Turkey has caused the confirmed death, at the moment, of 67 people including women and children. The Head of State, who landed at the Sant’Anna airport in Isola Capo Rizzuto, drove to the San Giovanni di Dio hospital where 15 people, the survivors of the shipwreck, are hospitalised. The president welcomed upon arrival by some applause at the entrance to the hospital was welcomed by the extraordinary commissioner of the provincial health agency of Crotone Simona Carbone and by the medical director Lucio Cosentino who accompanied him to the wards.
“President do not abandon us”. This is the invocation addressed by the crowd to Mattarella as he leaves the San Giovanni di Dio hospital in Crotone, where the Head of State went to visit the hospitalized survivors of last Sunday’s shipwreck in the waters of Steccato di Cutro. The Head of State limited himself to a greeting and got into the car in the direction of the nearby Palamilone, where the funeral home was set up with the coffins of the victims of the tragedy.
Even the secretary of the Democratic Party Elly Schlein will be in Crotone today, together with a delegation of dem parliamentarians. Schlein will also go to the PalaMilone. “He will not make statements to the press”, communicates the Democratic Party in a note.
