Onions are a vegetable that produces several different crops. Even in spring, you can start collecting leaves for salads and soups, and in autumn the plant produces bulbs – a valuable source of vitamins. But in order to get a good harvest, you need to plant onions on time.
GLOBAL HAPPENINGS tells you when to plant onions correctly. And how to take care of her.
When and how to plant onions
In open soil, the vegetable must be transferred when night frosts end. This usually happens before the beginning of April. Under the garden, you need to choose a plot of the garden, well lit by the sun – onions love heat and light. It will be good if potatoes, tomatoes or melons grew here before. If you plant onions in the same place year after year, this can deplete the soil.
To prepare the land, it needs to be dug up and fertilized with manure or compost at the rate of 5 kg per 1 sq. m. You can also make potash or phosphorus fertilizers in the proportion of 30 g per 1 sq. km. m.
How to prepare bulbs for planting
In order for the onion sets to “wake up”, it is recommended to leave it overnight in a warm place. And in order to protect the future crop from diseases, the bulbs are advised to be immersed in a pink potassium permanganate solution for 30 minutes. After such soaking, the seed must be dried.
When sowing onions, it is also important to take into account the ripening time of the selected variety. You can focus on the following indicators:
- onions – 90-100 days;
- mid-season – 100-120 days;
- late – more than 120 days;
- purple – 100-120 days;
How to plant onions
You need to plant a vegetable in open ground and in a pot on the windowsill in a slightly different way. For the garden, it is necessary to make holes 2-3 cm deep at a distance of 10 cm from each other. One bulb is planted in one hole. In this case, it must be slightly pressed into the ground. From above, the seedlings are covered with a layer of earth 1-2 cm thick. Shoots should appear in 1-2 weeks – the germination rate depends on how warm the weather is.
You can grow green onions at home by immersing the vegetable roots in a glass of water. You can also dig it into the ground at a shallow depth so that most of the bulb is on the surface. When grown in soil, the vegetable should be watered with a small amount of water every few days.
