Charles III in the Bundestag: facing the future – if that is not historical

This speech can go down in the history books. Charles III in the German parliament – which says almost everything in German. And what: only facing the future!

Not that Charles would have said it exactly like that, no, not that. That’s how he intoned it though. It was a hymn to the German-British community, from the Hanseatic League to Kraftwerk and the Beatles, from sports to high culture, Handel, Shakespeare, not to forget humor. And he has some.

Yes, the British government co-wrote this speech, they are required to do so ex officio, but he gave it. A witty, distant relative, literally, who appreciates how Germany has evolved and strives for good.

Charles, who is no longer the youngest, knows the past. It stands for tradition and hints of modernity in one. Climate protection, protection of species, healthy nutrition, ecological agriculture, architecture are not whims, but challenges of the time. that he saw ahead of time.

You don’t get that every day, so as not to say: you can’t quickly recall a head of state who made such a statement. Brexit? Was yesterday. The king makes an offer on behalf of his majesty: You’ll never walk alone.

Technology, sustainability, mindfulness, environment, freedom and responsibility using the example of Ukraine – everything is included. With that comes an obligation. For both sides: to serve the good, united as brothers. Not slacking off, and at the same time not leaving behind as a partner Britain, which is less big, less important than it used to be.

A reminder, but quite elegant. Very British. And the Federal President appeared happy.

A king, not an elected leader, not a political one. But for his role, Charles’s speech was very political. Facing the future, even before the coronation. If that’s not historical.
