(ANSA) – BENEVENTO, 05 NOV – Don Nicola De Blasio, parish priest in Benevento and director of the diocesan Caritas, under investigation for detention of child pornography, remains under house arrest. This is the decision of the investigating judge of the Court of Benevento at the end of the validation hearing held in the morning.
The precautionary measure stems from an investigation by the Turin Public Prosecutor’s Office and a search by the Postal Police which found child pornography files on a computer used by the priest. Don Nicola – according to his lawyers – answered all the magistrates’ questions by firmly denying “any kind of impulse towards images”. The material, according to the defense, belonged to a dossier that the priest was collecting in the period 2015/16 to document the phenomenon of child pornography in the Church. An investigation that was stopped when he realized he couldn’t continue doing it without any authorization. That material had not been consulted since then.
The lawyers also reported that the PC on which the files were located was not working. “For a sort of forgetfulness – they say – those files were never deleted but they never ended up online. The first view after so many years was that of the agents who went to search the computer”.
Don Nicola said he was “sorry” for having ruined the image of the Church, even if “unwittingly”. He is considered a “finished priest” as he was relieved of his post as parish priest of the Church of San Modesto, in the Rione Libertà, and as director of Caritas. (HANDLE).
