When Petrovsky Lent begins: what not to do and what to eat during the day

At the beginning of summer, one of the four multi-day fasts for Orthodox Christians falls – Petrovsky. He is held before the feast of Peter and Paul. The duration of this fast depends on the Easter holidays. The later Easter, the longer the fast will be. It begins on the second Monday after Trinity.

GLOBAL HAPPENINGS tells when Petrovsky Lent begins in 2023. And with what restrictions, including in food, it is connected.

When does Petrovka start in 2023

Petrovsky post among the people has several names – Petrovka, Peter and Paul post, Apostolic post. It is not too harsh, but very important for the Orthodox.

The beginning of the fast falls on the second Monday after Trinity, so this year it will be June 12th. Petrovka always ends on the eve of the celebration of the Day of the Saints and the glorious glorious first apostles Peter and Paul, the date of which is intransitive – this is July 12th. Therefore, this year, fasting on this holiday will last a month.

What restrictions does Petrovsky post provide?

In addition to food restrictions, fasting days are also associated with greater restraint in the behavior of believers. You should not arrange loud entertainment, parties, have a lot of fun. This period should be devoted to the purification of the soul, contact with God and prayer, so excessive fun will be inappropriate.

As for food, in the Petrovsky post, dietary restrictions are clearly scheduled and depend on the day of the week. They are lighter than during the harsh Great Lent, because fish is allowed in Petrovka. This is because Saint Peter, before becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ, was engaged, like his family, in fishing. Honoring his memory and deeds, the church allows you to eat this product on all days except Wednesday and Friday.

Consequently, food bans on Petrovka are distributed as follows:

  • Monday – allowed hot dishes cooked without oil;
  • Tuesday – you can add fish and mushroom dishes, as well as butter to the menu;
  • Wednesday – only dry food is possible;
  • Thursday – in addition to fish, you can eat seafood;
  • Friday – only dry food is possible;
  • Saturday – it is allowed to eat fish and mushrooms and cook in vegetable oil;
  • Sunday – fish and songs are allowed – hot dishes in oil.

A certain weakening exists for church holidays, which may fall on the days of Petrovsky Lent. These days you can cook pies with fish and seafood.

Prohibitions of the Petrovsky post

In this post, some activities are prohibited. In particular, believers are not allowed to:

  • get married and play a wedding;
  • work after sunset;
  • do needlework;
  • lend money;
  • cut hair.

Separately, the Orthodox Church asks not to quarrel and not to swear with each other. Bad thoughts and statements interfere with the purification of the soul.
