What flowers attract butterflies: what to plant to make the garden more beautiful

The flower garden itself is a place full of beauty. But it can be made even more beautiful if you attract the most beautiful pollinators of insects – butterflies to the plants.

As GLOBAL HAPPENINGS found out, it is not so difficult to do this if you plant flowers, the nectar of which the butterflies feed on. These will definitely be plants with a bright color, because these insects are also guided by color. Also, most of these flowers have a wonderful sweet aroma. So, from such an organization of the garden, everyone will only benefit.

What problems can arise due to butterflies

This wonderful medal cannot but have a reverse side. And this flip side is the caterpillar. Flocking to flowers, butterflies not only collect nectar from them, but also lay eggs on plants, from which their larvae hatch – a caterpillar. And these creatures feed on leaves. Therefore, those who want to admire adult insects should be prepared for the consequences of the activities of their “children”.

However, even more butterflies will come out of the caterpillar later, so this trouble can be tolerated if it is not about agricultural plants, but purely about the aesthetic side. However, experienced gardeners warn – it is better not to put up with white butterflies. They live on plants of the cabbage family and cause them serious harm.

Next, let’s talk about plants that butterflies like. We divide them into perennial species and annuals.

perennial flowers

asters

It is better to choose two varieties – New Belgian and Marcinki. The first will begin to bloom at the end of summer and will delight with flowers until September, the second will pick up the baton immediately after and will bloom until frost. All Indian summer butterflies will be in your garden.

This is a fairly large shrub that can grow up to 2 meters. Its purple flowers have a sweet honey scent that butterflies love. Flowers on stroydley abound from August until November.

Helenium autumn

The flowers of this plant resemble chamomile and have the most attractive colors for butterflies in yellow, orange and red. Gelenium blooms in the middle of summer and pleases with flowers until late cold. Butterflies love it for its large amount of nectar.

Syrian squid

Sufficiently tall (up to 1.5 m) plants in the middle of summer produce orange or purple inflorescences that have an unusual aroma with hints of vanilla or chocolate. Butterflies adore this fragrance and flock to the fleece in whole flocks. However, this plant is an invasive species, so you will have to strictly control its distribution if you do not want it to take over the entire area.

Heliotrope

The peculiarity of large, up to 12 cm, inflorescences of the plant is that they return after the sun. Also, these flowers have a sweet aroma with hints of vanilla, very pleasant for butterflies. Heliotrope blooms almost the entire warm season.

Lavender

The aroma of these flowers is difficult to confuse with something else. Lavender can form incredibly beautiful blue-purple carpets of flowers, on which many butterflies flock. This beauty can be observed from June to October.

Liatris spikelet

The herbaceous plant pleases floriculture lovers with inflorescences of white, lilac and pink. They appear around the middle of summer and bloom for 30-40 days, attracting butterflies.

Echinacea purpurea

This aster relative produces large flowers in various shades of pink, burgundy, lilac and white in early August. Flowering continues until October.

Poskonnik

Another late summer flower. Thyroid inflorescences appear around the middle of this time and bloom until autumn. More often, the vine is purple-pink, but white varieties are also found.

goldenrod

Fluffy inflorescences of cheerful yellow color admire the eye all summer – from May to September. Butterflies are attracted by their scent and bright colors.

annual flowers

Most often, three species are recommended to attract butterflies: blue ageratum, double-pinnate cosmea and zinnia. Cosmea blooms first in mid-June and produces white, pink and red flowers until the end of September. The time for zinnia comes at the height of summer. Until the very beginning of frost, she admires the eye with bright orange, yellow or red baskets. Ageratum blooms in July and flourishes until the end of autumn. It blooms in globular inflorescences filled with nectar.

Other annual flowers that will become a magnet for butterflies include rudbeckia, marigold, sage, oregano, calendula, snapdragon, various spurges and violets. You can choose the colors of these plants to your liking, because they boast a great wealth of shades.
