June is a hot time for gardeners. A variety of crops begin to descend, weeds appear, pest control is activated.
At the beginning of summer, the main task is to provide potatoes with everything necessary for the normal formation and development of tubers. GLOBAL HAPPENINGS has collected the main tips for gardeners for a generous harvest.
Potato hilling
There are still discussions among gardeners about the need for June hilling. However, the benefits of the procedure can not be overestimated. Hilling will contribute to the growth of additional roots, on which root crops are then formed.
In addition, the risk of tuber exposure should be eliminated. The fact is that under direct sunlight, potatoes acquire a characteristic green color. It increases the production of glycoalkaloids, including the poisonous solanine.
In general, the procedure is recommended to be carried out three times:
- The first should be done after germination, when the greens stretch 7-10 cm above the ground.
- the second start about two weeks after the first (height 15-17 cm);
- the third time the potatoes need to be spudded when the bush grows to 25 cm. At the same time, it is not necessary to completely cover the bush with earth, it is enough to throw a little soil between the shoots.
If you start hilling too late, there is a risk of damage to the bushes, which will lead to a partial loss of the crop.
What is mulching
Mulching is useful for preventing weeds from growing and retaining moisture. Experienced gardeners say that the fewer weeds in the garden, the less chance the potatoes have of catching fungal diseases. Straw has long been used as mulch.
Protective measures
To protect potatoes from pests, late blight and bacterial diseases, you can prepare a special mixture.
For 10 liters of water, you need to take 40 g of bitoxibacillin and 30 g of phytosporin. Spraying the plant in this way is advised in the morning in calm weather. If necessary, you can re-treat after two weeks.
