The government of Mexico City has announced that it has received confirmation that it has entered the Guinness Book of World Records as the city with the most free WiFi points in the world, 21,500. Milenio TV reports it.
The announcement was made yesterday during a ceremony in which a plaque was discovered concerning the event near the emblematic ‘Angel of Independence’ of the Mexican capital, by the governor of the city, Claudia Sheinbaum, and by the official judge of the ‘Guinness World Record’ for Latin America, Carlos Tapia Rojas.
In particular, Sheinbaum praised the work of both the local authorities and the Telmex company, with which, thanks to constructive negotiations, savings were made in communication and internet services.
“Without the need to allocate more resources than those paid for ordinary maintenance, and indeed even with savings – he added – we were able to establish a collaboration agreement that allowed us to have connectivity via optical fiber in every point where A fixed camera was placed in Mexico City, a city with a population of 9.2 million.
José Antonio Peña Merino, head of the Digital Agency for Public Innovation (ADIP), stressed for his part that the city’s WiFi network is the largest and most open of any other urban agglomeration in the world.
The manager also claimed that it is a service that ensures Internet coverage in 1,600 neighborhoods and that, for example, the total of ‘hotspot’ points is 500 higher than those of the second best-supplied capital, which is Moscow.
