(ANSA) – PISA, 11 NOV – The 60th anniversary of the massacre of Kindu, in Congo, is commemorated today in Pisa. The ambush was carried out by insurgent soldiers and the massacre. It was the first mission of the Italian Air Force on behalf of the United Nations and was stained with blood. On 11 November 1961 two aircraft of the 46 / ma Aerobrigata, ‘Lyra 5’ and ‘Lupo 33’, engaged in support activities for the UN forces, reached the airport of Kindu, Congo, with the task of supplying the blue helmets Malaysians. But outside the airport, 13 Italian aviators were attacked by rebel troops of the Congolese National Army. The bodies were only recovered months later, after a policeman had buried them in two mass graves. On 11 March 1962 the bodies were brought home and then buried in Pisa in the Memorial built thanks to donations from the Italians.
The massacre was commemorated today by the 46th Air Brigade of Pisa inside the military airport, with the laying of a laurel wreath at the Kindu Shrine and the mass celebrated by the Military Ordinary, Archbishop Santo Marcianò, in the presence of the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, General Luca Goretti. A C-119, the same aircraft used for that peacekeeping mission, placed as “Gate Guardian” in front of the Kindu Shrine, has been restored and brought back to the original colors and insignia of the UN operations in Congo.
