Cop26: 2 / a draft, target 1.5 C and CO2 cut 45% 2030 remain

(ANSA) – GLASGOW, 12 NOV – In the second draft of the final document of the Cop26 in Glasgow, published this morning after yesterday’s observations by the ministers of the participating countries, the goal of aiming to remain below 1.5 degrees remains compared to the first draft of global warming from pre-industrial levels (the most ambitious goal of the Paris Agreement), to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 45% by 2030 compared to 2010, and to reach net zero CO2 emissions around the middle of century. The request also remains for “deep reductions in greenhouse gas emissions that are not carbon dioxide”. In the second draft there remains an invitation to urgently update the decarbonisation objectives (NDC) for those countries that have not yet done so (the Agreement of Paris planned to update in 2020). But the forecast of a further update by the end of 2022, present in the first draft, disappears.

The recognition of the importance of the role of young people, women and indigenous communities in the fight against the climate crisis remains unchanged in the second version of the document. (HANDLE).
