(ANSA) – TARANTO, NOV 19 – A judicial police operation was carried out this morning by soldiers of the Taranto Coast Guard against illegal fishing and subsequent illegal marketing of sea cucumbers (the so-called sea cucumbers), a protected marine species that covers a central role for the balance of the marine ecosystem.
17 pre-trial detention orders were notified, signed by the Gip of the Taranto Court at the request of the prosecutor. The operation involved more than one hundred soldiers of the Coast Guard-Port Authority. Similar investigations have already been conducted in the past to combat the trafficking of sea cucumbers with Asian countries, in particular China, where they are sold at prices up to $ 600 per kilo and are processed to make cosmetics.
