(ANSA) – ANCONA, NOV 19 – ‘Nonna Peppina’, aka Giuseppa Fattori, the old woman who became the symbol of the resilience of the earthquake victims, died. He would have turned 99 on November 26. He had refused to leave a wooden house built near his home, reduced to a pile of rubble in San Martino di Fiastra (Macerata) by the 2016 earthquake. A house declared illegal, but then ‘remedied’ by the ‘Salva Peppina’ law . The old woman, nominated Commander of the republic by President Mattarella last February, had still had time to see the start of the work for the reconstruction of her real home in December 2020. “I hope to be able to go and live there for at least one day” he had said the day the work started after “4 very difficult years” he had admitted. Nonna Peppina died this morning in the wooden house she hadn’t left for months.
“It was very fragile” the mayor of Fiastra Sauro Scaficchia told ANSA, recalling that “it was now a symbol for everyone”. His battle, supported by his daughters Agata and Gabriella, had landed in the parliamentary halls, up to the famous law that had regularized the illegal house. But his case had paved the way for other rules in favor of the earthquake victims. The funeral will be celebrated tomorrow at 3.00 pm in the sanctuary of Beato Ugolino in Fiegni di Fiastra. (HANDLE).
