Germany’s new coalition should take a tougher stance on Nord Stream 2. This was stated by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba, RBC-Ukraine reports.

“The Ukrainian side calls on the new German coalition to take a tougher stance on Nord Stream 2. The project certification process must fully comply not only with the letter, but also with the spirit of European legislation. We are waiting for the appointment of a new German government and wish the new coalition success for the good of Germany and Europe, which meets the interests of Ukraine, “he said.

According to Kuleba, Ukraine welcomes the approval of the new coalition agreement in Germany and noted that it is very important for our country that the current German government agrees with our principled position.

He also noted that the text of the coalition agreement for the first time recognizes the importance of separating Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova in the framework of the Eastern Partnership and confirms the support of Ukraine on the path of European integration. “

The Foreign Minister also insists that the new government of the FRG demanded from Russia an immediate end to attempts to destabilize Ukraine, violations of the ceasefire in Donbass and an end to the annexation of Crimea.

“The coalition agreement contains a readiness to develop an energy partnership with Ukraine, which lays the foundation for strengthening the strategic partnership between Kiev and Berlin for many years to come,” he summed up.

Note that today the leader of the Social Democratic Party of Germany Olaf Scholz will replace Angela Merkel as Federal Chancellor of Germany. The three parties that entered the Bundestag agreed to create a ruling coalition.

Elections in Germany

  • Elections to the Bundestag were held at the end of September. The bloc of Christian Democrats, to which Angela Merkel belongs, lost 48 seats in parliament, the Social Democrats received 53 more seats than they had before the elections.

Nord Stream 2 certification

The scandalous Russian gas pipeline Nord Stream 2 is already fully ready for launch, but it cannot begin commercial gas supplies until it passes the mandatory certification procedure, which, according to the law, should look like this:

  • the application is first filed with the German regulator, which reviews it within four months (this deadline will expire on January 8);
  • then, within two months, all participants in the certification process, including European agencies and the European Commission, can comment on its decisions;
  • after that the solution is returned to the regulator and he delivers the final verdict.

Russia has repeatedly insisted on speeding up this procedure and put pressure on the European Union to launch the gas pipeline already on January 8. The Kremlin explained this by the fact that additional gas volumes would help resolve the energy crisis in Europe, although experts argue that that there is no connection between this.

In addition, on November 23, the head of the State Department, Anthony Blinken, announced that the United States was imposing additional sanctions against one company and two ships associated with the construction of Nord Stream 2.
