Zelensky told what he expects from the new Chancellor of Germany

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said at a press conference that he expects a clearer position on Ukraine’s European integration from the new German chancellor Olaf Scholz, but he is not closely acquainted with him.

“I am not close to the new Chancellor. I am sure that there will be normal relations,” Zelensky answered when asked about Scholz. The President also added that he expects from the new Chancellor and the German government, and the whole of Ukraine, the fulfillment of agreements on the transit of gas from Russia through our gas transportation system, as well as promotion to NATO and the EU.

“Yesterday I had a conversation with Angela Merkel. I believe that the relationship should be even better. But this is already negotiations with the new chancellor. As a progressive person, I look forward to substantive things and results, both in energy security and energy independence of Ukraine, and tranquility in the Ukrainian Donbass. Strong sanctions policy until our territory is returned to us, powerful guarantees regarding gas from the side of Germany and still maximum pressure on Russia until the end of the war in Donbass, which has been going on for 8 years already “– Zelensky said.

Nord Stream 2

“I would really like to see the practical implementation of Ukraine’s energy security. We managed to reach an agreement in December in the“ Normandy format ”. We received money. Then we agreed with the Russian Federation. Germany played an important role here, and especially Merkel. I would like so that we count on this assistance. I would like Nord Stream 2 to be not just a weapon of Russia, and not just a business between some European countries, including Germany and Russia. This is a great tragedy for us – what else can we get? one resource that the Russian Federation will use in the negotiating diplomatic process so that we are protected, and the United States does everything not to lift the sanctions. We ourselves will not be able to ensure the energy security of Ukraine“, – the president concluded.

EU membership

As for our EU membership, it depends not only on Berlin, Zelensky said.

“It is difficult to talk about EU membership. Germany and France are our main colleagues in this matter among the European Union. Many countries are looking at them. I would very much like the new Chancellor to be clearer about Ukraine’s membership and not be afraid of a backlash from other countries. In this they could help us a lot.“, – said Zelensky.
