Autonomy prepares for an independence referendum

A year later, Scotland will try once again to secede from the United Kingdom, where it has been since 1707. The initiative to hold a referendum on secession from Britain was announced by the First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon.

Preparation
“Over the next year, I will initiate the process required to hold a referendum by the end of 2023. And just as important, our party will re-present strong arguments for independence“- said Sturgeon.
Such a referendum requires the approval of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Johnson, of course, disagrees with this formulation of the question, which means that any push for a new referendum could end in court proceedings.
Situation
- The latest campaign for independence has been suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic and will resume as early as 2022.
- During the 2016 referendum on Britain’s exit from the European Union, the British and the Scots had different positions. 52% of British voters supported leaving the EU, when 62% of Scots voted against.
- In 2021, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson opposed a new referendum on Scottish independence. He argues that the Scots are not yet ready for a new vote, since such referendums only need to be held once in a generation.
