(ANSA) – TRENTO, 02 DEC – The camera traps of the Trento Science Museum (Muse) have immortalized the passage of a wild cat at the foot of the Pale di San Martino, in Primiero.

The species has never been sighted before in eastern Trentino. The discovery – reports a note – was born from a collaboration between Muse, the biology department of the University of Florence and the research sector of the Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Natural Park, started in 2020 with the monitoring of mammals present in the area of Park.

According to experts, the presence of the wild cat is good news for the ecosystems of Trentino and the Alps in general, in an environment that remains strongly characterized by the presence of man.

“It is a solitary, territorial and nocturnal species with a predilection for broad-leaved forest environments, which in the past suffered cruel persecution because it was considered a pest by farmers. Since the mid-seventies the protection granted to it has allowed its demographic recovery, however the species has a very restricted distribution in the Alps.

Our photographic discovery is therefore important, because it testifies to a possible expansion towards the west of the nucleus present in northern Veneto “, explained the researcher Marco Salvatori. (ANSA).
