‘Ambulance of death’, stretcher bearer arrested after sentencing

(ANSA) – CATANIA, 07 DEC – The carabinieri of the provincial command of Catania have arrested Agatino Scalisi, one of the stretcher bearers accused in the ‘Ambulance of death’ investigation. The measure, requested by the Prosecutor’s Office, follows the man’s sentence to 30 years of imprisonment for multiple aggravated voluntary homicide and extortion aggravated by having favored illegal activities of mafia clans. The sentence was issued on 25 November by the Gup Carla Valenti, who accepted the request of the Prosecutor Andrea Bonomo, at the conclusion of the process celebrated with the abbreviated procedure. According to the reconstruction of the District Prosecutor’s Office, based on statements by witnesses and relatives of the victims, shared by the Judge, the sick were killed during transport by private ambulance from the Biancavilla hospital to their respective homes, through intravenous air injections providing the their death from air embolism and claiming that they had died of natural causes. The goal is to earn the 200-300 euros of ‘gift’ that the family would have given him for the ‘dressing’ of the body. Money that would then be shared with the mafia clans of Biancavilla and Adrano. Scalisi, who had chosen the shortened procedure, was sentenced for only one episode of murder committed against a seriously ill elderly lady, transported on April 5, 2014. Another stretcher bearer, Davide Garofalo, has already been sentenced by the Court of Assizes of Catania on 20 May 2021 for three different episodes of aggravated murder committed between 2014 and 2016, and has filed an appeal against the sentence. Both were also convicted of aggravated extortion against the funeral parlor of the Arena brothers Giuseppe and Luca, who later became witnesses of justice. The investigation by the Catania Public Prosecutor’s Office had sprung from a report from ‘Le Iene’.
