(ANSA) – BARI, 16 DEC – He allegedly started 13 forest fires and two fires of special and solid urban waste in the countryside of Cassano delle Murge (Bari) between 2020 and 2021. For this reason, after two years of investigations, a former employee of the Puglia Region, in charge of the forest fire fighting sector, was arrested by the Forestry Corps of the Carabinieri who consider the man “gifted with particular experience and dexterity in leaving no trace of his actions and moved by a concrete and repeated will to hit the woods “. When he started the fires, the man was no longer employed by the Region for some time. For him the charges are of forest fire and illegal burning of waste, all committed with intent. According to what is learned, the arrested man, from Cassano delle Murge, had a criminal record for other types of crimes. The investigation, which began in July 2020, was conducted by the military of the investigative nucleus of the Agri-Food and Forestry Environmental Police, and by the soldiers of the Bari Forestry Carabinieri group, coordinated by the Bari Public Prosecutor’s Office.

Some of the fires started by the suspect in various locations in the Cassano delle Murge countryside – it is specified in a note from the Carabinieri – “did not produce worse consequences for the environment and public safety, only thanks to the rapid intervention of vehicles and men of the bodies and associations in charge of the forest fire prevention campaign “.

Last summer there were 137 forest fires that hit the provinces of Bari and Barletta-Andria-Trani, sending over a thousand hectares of forest up in smoke. (HANDLE).
