(ANSA) – VATICAN CITY, DEC 30 – In 2021 22 missionaries were killed in the world: 13 priests, 1 religious, 2 religious, 6 lay people. Regarding the continental breakdown – according to data collected by Fides – the highest number is recorded in Africa, where 11 missionaries were killed (7 priests, 2 religious, 2 lay people); followed by America, with 7 missionaries killed (4 priests, 1 religious, 2 lay people) then Asia, where 3 missionaries (1 priest, 2 lay people) were killed, and Europe, where 1 priest was killed. From 2000 to 2020, again according to Fides data, 536 missionaries were killed in the world.
Among the missionaries killed in 2021 is Nadia de Munari, an Italian lay missionary, 50, who belonged to the group of volunteers of Operation Mato Grosso operating in Peru; she died on April 24, 2021 after being attacked with a machete while she was sleeping. He is of Italian origin, but born in Venezuela to parents who emigrated from Montefusco, in the province of Avellino, also brother Luigi Manganiello, 49, a religious of the Brothers of the Christian Schools; he was hit in the body and head with a blunt object by thieves he had discovered while they were stealing from the premises of the school where he taught, in the center of Barquisimeto (Venezuela).
