WHO, Omicron could generate more dangerous Covid variants

Naples,

The multiplication of Omicron cases around the world, the World Health Organization warned today, could increase the risk of the emergence of a new, more dangerous variant of Covid-19.
Catherine Smallwood, a WHO emergency response manager, said “the more Omicron spreads, the more it is broadcast and the more it replicates, the more likely it is to generate a new variant.” “Currently Omicron is lethal, it can cause death (…) Maybe a little less than Delta, but who knows what the next variant might generate?” He added.
Europe has recorded over 100 million Covid cases since the start of the pandemic and over five million new cases in the last week of 2021, which “overshadows almost everything we’ve seen so far,” Smallwood also pointed out. . “We are in a very dangerous phase, contamination rates are increasing very significantly in Western Europe and the real impact of this is not yet clear,” he said.
While “individual risk of hospitalization is likely to be lower” with the Omicron variant than with the Delta, overall the Omicron could pose a greater threat due to the number of cases, he continued. “When the number of cases increases so significantly, many more people with serious illness are likely to end up in hospital or even die,” he said.
