“Each of us as an individual citizen and all together as a community must feel the responsibility of continuing to weave the web of equality with the thread that has been handed over to us by the generations that preceded us”. Thus the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, in the preface to the book by Ernesto Maria Ruffini “Equal by Constitution. History of an unfinished utopia from 1948 to today”, published by Corriere della Sera.

“Laws alone are not enough – writes Mattarella – The words written in the legislative collections risk remaining fixed only on paper if they are not also accompanied by the ability of everyone to do their duty, to feel part of a community”. “The signs and seeds left in our history by the fundamental principles of the Constitutional Charter still represent our most precious heritage”, notes the President of the Republic. Ruffini’s essay “is the story of how we Italians have been able to fill a special, demanding word with content and depth: equality”.

And “step by step, it takes us back to the moment when Italy emerged from the tragedy of dictatorship and war and, in freedom, began to build its new democracy”. For Mattarella “it has not always been an easy path. If anything, at times, tiring. Certainly unstoppable, even if in many respects still incomplete. Able to set new goals, to be achieved together”. And over the decades “we have collected a legacy from that extraordinary season that we in turn must hand over to the new generations”. In reading the parliamentary accounts of the debates on the main laws, “we see the extraordinary journey of our democracy and we catch the attentive gaze of the citizens who are asking Parliament to give life to constitutional principles”. And then “we understand the role of the Constitutional Court called to guarantee full observance of our Constitution. And we also understand how it is everyone’s responsibility to continue along the path”.
