While his young citizens seem to lose interest in politics, a mayor of Essonne had an unusual idea to bring them back to public affairs. François Parolini has registered on the TikTok platform, where he has accumulated hundreds of thousands of views with his short humorous videos.

François Parolini, various left-wing mayor of the small town of Itteville in Essonne, has chosen to register on the TikTok social network. The reason ? “As part of our participatory policy, we organize a lot of meetings. But it is always the same people who go there and never teenagers”, explains the elected official. West France. Although active on Facebook, the municipality says that young people from Itteville do not go to this social network. They lack information, still assures the municipality.

François Parolini has therefore invested in TikTok, mainly to encourage these young voters to take an interest in politics, whether local or national. “During the last elections, the participation of this age category was very low”, he further explains to West France. “Young people shun the ballot box too much and that has to change,” continues the city councilor.
An unexpected success
Registered since the end of December, the Essonne mayor is now at the head of a community of 3,000 subscribers. He accumulates thousands, even hundreds of thousands, of views on his short humorous videos: “We did not expect this success at all so we are both surprised and satisfied.” His most watched video, however, has nothing to do with politics: we see François Parolini preparing to celebrate a wedding on Valentine’s Day.
